Brian Kajiyama is from Kailua, O‘ahu, Hawaii and attends the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa where he is pursuing a master’s in education from the Counseling department, focusing on vocational rehabilitation. His undergraduate studies were in Liberal Studies, where he focused on advocacy for the disabled.
Brian is a person with cerebral palsy, which affects his mobility and speech. He communicates through augmentative communication with speech output and hopes to become a counselor or have a career in a helping profession.
Currently, Brian serves as a board member for the Disability and Communication Access Board (DCAB). He also is the co-executive director of “Pathways,” the online newsletter for the National Institute of Multicultural Competence (NIMC).
For the past year, Brian has been a graduate assistant for the Cultural and Linguistic Diversity Transition Success Research Project (CLD) headed by Dr. David Leake. As part of this project, Brian works closely with Dr. James Skouge to create digital stories that can be easily shared with people across the country and world.
